I have had the opportunity to work with students in a number of forums outside of school in the past few years. I enjoy getting to know my students outside of school and try to involve myself in supporting their extra curricular activities when I am able. This might mean going to their concerts, plays, sporting events, etc. when ever I can. With the small size of ASB and the incredible amount of student involvement in extra curriculars, this is quite easy to do.
I also make an effort to take leadership roles in these sports and clubs, whether it's acting in a student play, volunteering to be a Geography Bee judge, or larger roles as a co-coach of our MS Math Counts program or coach of our ASB girls soccer teams. I have been a coach for our MS girls soccer team for 2 years and recently moved to assist coaching our high school girls soccer team this year. I have been involved as a coach in Math Counts for all three years at ASB.
I have always wanted to start new clubs and activities for students such as chess clubs, puzzle clubs, etc but unfortunately have never found the time as I tend to fill these times with other academic committees and leadership roles within the school. This is a part of my profession that I enjoy taking part in and want to continue to explore. I believe strongly in the positive power of student engagement outside the classroom and will continue to look for opportunities to take the lead role in helping students start various group to explore things they are passionate about.
